What is The Church?
What is the church? This is a question that has been asked throughout history. The answer, of course, depends on who you ask. For some, the church is a physical building. For others, it is a group of people who come together to worship God. Still others see the church as a spiritual institution that extends beyond time and space.
No matter how you define it, the church is an important part of Christianity. Jesus himself said, “I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it” (Matthew 16:18). The Church is where believers come together to learn about God and grow in their faith. It is also where they find fellowship and support from other Christians.

Who is Jesus?
This is another question that has been asked throughout history. The answer, of course, depends on who you ask. For some, Jesus is a prophet or a great teacher. For others, he is the Son of God who died for our sins.
What all Christians have in common is that we believe that Jesus is the Christ, the anointed one. He is the one who was prophesied to come and save the world. In John 4:25-26, Jesus himself says that He is the Messiah who has come to save the world. “The woman said, ‘I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.’ Then Jesus told her, “I am the Messiah!”
Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem. He ministered to people by preaching and doing miracles such as healing the sick and giving sight to the blind. At the end of his life, he went up a mountain near Jerusalem where he was betrayed by Judas Iscariot and arrested by the Roman soldiers. He was falsely accused by religious leaders and sentenced to death by crucifixion, a form of execution that involved hanging the victim on a wooden cross until he died.
Jesus Christ’s death was not the end of his story, however. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead! Through his resurrection, he conquered death and proved to the whole world that he was indeed the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament.
Jesus Christ is God’s Son and He came to earth as a man so he could die on the cross for our sins. Jesus’ death and resurrection bring us salvation: eternal life with God in heaven! This good news, this Gospel, is what Christians preach and believe.

What is Prayer?
Prayer is a time-honored tradition that people have been practicing since the beginning of recorded history. It’s also one of the most misunderstood activities in Christianity.
In many cases, people think they know what prayer is all about because they’ve seen it done on TV or read about it in books and magazines. But as soon as you start going to church, you’ll see for yourself how different real-life prayer can be from those images on television or in stories–and maybe not so much better!
It would be dangerous to assume that your idea of prayer was accurate just because it came from a source outside the church. In fact, there are some things that TV shows and movies get right while others get wrong or leave out entirely.
Types of Prayer
The first clue that you don’t know as much about prayer as you may think is the term itself: “prayer.” Churches use many words and expressions for talking to God, but most of them are based on the Latin word “oratio,” which means “to pray” or “a prayer.”
For instance, there is “adoration,” which means to show the utmost respect. Churches use this word when people address God with words like “Almighty God” or “Lord of all creation.” There are also acts of praise, thanksgiving, and confession. Churches may choose to do these acts at different times during worship, but they are all expressions of adoration.
There is “supplication,” which means to ask for help or favor, such as praying for another person. Churches may do this around the time of giving an offering during worship when people pray for those who have given money and those who need it. Churches also use supplication when someone is sick or in need of something. Churches also call this “intercession.”
There is “petition,” which means to make a formal request, such as writing your Congressman about an important issue. Churches may do this during worship when someone volunteers to pray for another person or group in the church. Churches also petition God on behalf of their communities. Churches also call this “intercession.”
There is “benediction,” which means to say farewell, such as when the pastor says, “The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace” at the end of the service. Churches call this “blessing.”
Prayer is an important part of church life because it’s how we communicate with God. Churches will always offer worship, but often there are opportunities for members to pray outside of formal worship if they want to do so on their own. Churches also encourage members to pray together as small groups. Churches may also choose to incorporate some or all of these expressions of prayer into regular worship services.
What is The Bible?
It’s common for people outside of church (and even some people inside) to think that the Bible is just another book, like a collection of short stories or essays bound together in one volume. But the Bible is more than a book; it’s 66 books bound together as one Holy Book.
Each of the 66 books in the Bible was written by a different person, sometimes one on his own and sometimes by many people working together. There are 39 books in the Old Testament that tell us about what God did with his people, Israel. There are 27 books in the New Testament that tell us about God’s work with all of humankind.
The book you know as the Bible is actually a collection of these 66 different writings by 40 different authors working over a period of 1,500 years. Churches call that collection “The Holy Bible,” but it is often shortened to just the word “Bible.” Churches also refer to these 66 different writings as “Scripture,” and you will hear people talk about Scripture and the Bible when talking about church life.
