Jesus, Our Messiah and King

It is said that the Jewish people were waiting for a Messiah to come. The Hebrew word “Mashiach” means “the anointed one.” In other words, they were waiting for someone who would be chosen by God and who would have certain qualities or qualifications. Jesus was sent to earth as the promised Messiah, fulfilling all of these prophecies, with his death and resurrection. He fulfilled this prophecy in many ways: being born on time, in Israel during King Herod’s reign; coming from a royal family (King David); having a virgin birth; growing up without sin; living as a holy man devoted to God; doing miracles beyond anyone else ever seen before him; being rejected by the Jews because he was not from their tribe but welcomed by many Gentiles, and finally dying a cruel death on the cross.

Though he died, Jesus conquered death by rising from the dead on Easter morning. This event is what we celebrate every year on Easter Sunday. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples and showed them that he was alive! In fact, he even ate with them. He then gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit and commissioned them to go out and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20).

The Church is not a building or an organization but rather it is the people who have come to faith in Jesus Christ. When someone becomes a Christian, they are baptized into the Church and become part of this worldwide community. The Bible speaks of the Church as the “Bride of Christ” and as his body here on earth.

Just as a human body has many parts with different functions, the Church is made up of many members who each have their own role in serving God. Each person who follows Jesus Christ is called to use their gifts to build up the Body of Christ.

These are the qualities that reflect the character of Jesus Christ.
