Prayer
Prayer is talking to God. Even though He knows everything, including what you are thinking about (John 16:30), God wants us to pray because it helps us feel close to Him and shows God that we trust Him (John 15:7; 1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer is an important part of our relationship with God (Luke 18:1) and it also helps us grow closer to each other as people of faith (Hebrews 3:13; James 5:16).
Types of Prayer
There are many different types of prayer, but they all have one common goal: to focus on our relationship with God.
Prayer can be spoken out loud or silently in our heads. We can pray when we’re happy, or when we’re upset. We can pray alone, or with other people. There are no right or wrong ways to pray – it’s personal and between you and God!
Some of the most common types of prayer are:
1) Adoration: This type of prayer focuses on praising God for who He is. We might thank Him for His love, His mercy, or His grace. We might also praise Him for the things He’s done.
2) Confession: When we’re going through a tough time, it’s important to tell God what we’re thinking and feeling. It is also a good idea to ask for His help in our lives during these times. We might pray about specific concerns or confess when we’ve done something wrong that has upset God or another person.
3) Thanksgiving: This type of prayer is our way of telling God that we are thankful for the things He has done in our lives. We might be grateful for all the opportunities we’ve had, or the people He’s put into our lives.
4) Petition: If there is something you need help with, or if there is something you want to ask for, this is a good way to pray. You can pray about anything: your family, school, work, relationships, and even big things like wanting God’s help in making new friends or improving your health.
5) Intercession: This type of prayer asks God to give us wisdom and guidance when we need it. We might ask God to give us the strength we need to get through a tough time or help someone else who is struggling with something.
6) Spiritual Warfare: This type of prayer asks God for protection and asks Him to defeat anything that would try and stop us from following Him (Ephesians 6:12). If we’re struggling with certain things in our lives, we might pray and ask God to help us combat these issues (for example addictions).
Prayer can also take place when we’re meeting together in a group. Community worship is one of the most important ways that Christians gather together and it’s usually where people are praying out loud. For Christians, prayer is also an important part of reading the Bible. While you might not think about it all the time, praying before and after each chapter in the Gospel accounts helps us study scripture more clearly (Acts 8:26-31).
Spending Time with God
Spending time with God requires two things: having a quiet place and having time to ourselves. Here are some helpful guidelines on how to get started:
1) Set aside a certain amount of time each day, preferably after you’ve had your morning coffee and before you go to bed at night. This allows us to pray about everything we’re thinking and feeling throughout our day!
2) Choose a specific place that you’ll remember to go to every day. Many people find it helpful to pray in the bathroom: it’s a quiet, private place and there aren’t usually distractions like other people or TV.
3) Set up your space so that you’re comfortable when you pray. Some people use prayer benches, others sit on their beds, and still, others sit on the floor. It doesn’t matter what you use – be sure to find a quiet place where you won’t be distracted!
4) Prepare yourself by making sure that there are no distractions, like your phone or computer. You might also try turning it off for a while so that you can focus on God.
5) Pray! If you’re not sure what to say, you can use one of the five types of prayer listed above. You might also want to find bible passages that are meaningful to you and read them out loud.
6) Be patient with yourself – it’s natural for our minds to wander away from God throughout our time with Him! Don’t be afraid to ask for His help in praying, asking Him to guide your thoughts and words.
7) Have fun! Try new things or go somewhere different when you pray. You might even want to experiment with the five types of prayer listed above by using them during certain days of the week!
