Christ and Christianity

At its core, Christianity is about a relationship with God. But it’s also about community, love, and service. Jesus called us to follow Him and to love others as we love ourselves. He said that the greatest commandment was to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength; and the second was to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Christianity is about living for others instead of ourselves. It’s about reaching out in compassion to those who are hurting and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with them.

When someone becomes a follower of Jesus Christ, they are not only accepting God’s love for themselves, but they are also becoming part of something much bigger. They are now joined to the family of all believers throughout history.

Jesus promised that He would never leave us alone. And because He is in us, we are never alone. We can pray to Him anytime and anywhere.

Power of Prayer

One of the most important things we can do as Christians is to pray. Prayer is a way of talking to God, and it’s a way for us to get to know Him better. We can pray about anything—our needs, our concerns, what we’re struggling with, praise and thanksgiving, or anything else on our hearts.

When we pray, it’s important, to be honest with God. We can tell Him everything that’s on our minds and in our hearts. We don’t have to pretend to be someone we’re not. And we don’t have to worry about whether or not we’re saying the right thing.

God wants to hear from us, and He wants us to talk to Him. God delights in our prayers because they are an expression of our hearts.

There are many different types of prayer, and they can be used in different ways depending on what we need. Here are a few of the most common types of prayer:

Prayer of Supplication

This is when we pray for specific things—usually something we need or want. We might pray for help with a problem we’re having, for healing from an illness, or for God’s guidance in making a decision. We can also pray for the safety and well-being of others, especially those we love.

Prayer of Intercession

Intercession is when we pray on behalf of others. We might ask God to heal someone who is sick, to comfort someone who is grieving or lonely, to heal a relationship that has been damaged, and much more.

Prayer of Praise and Adoration

The Bible tells us to lift our hands and voices in praise to God because He lives forever. We can turn to Him with all we are and tell Him how much we love Him. And if we do feel like God has answered one of our prayers, we can thank Him for it.

Prayer of Confession

When we pray in this way, we talk to God about the things that are weighing on our hearts and minds—even if they’re not very pleasant or easy to tell anyone else. God knows everything about us, and He still loves us.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

God loves it when we thank Him for all He has done in our lives and for what He is going to do! This type of prayer reminds us that God’s love is constant. No matter how bad things seem, God is always there with His love and mercy.

Baptism

When we follow Jesus, God also wants to change the way we act. Baptism is one way that Christians publicly show that they are turning away from their old lives of sin and living for God’s purposes. Through baptism, we can celebrate new life in Christ with our brothers and sisters—a fresh start in our relationship with God and with others.

Baptism should be an act of purposeful commitment to Jesus Christ. It’s not something anyone else can do for us, nor is it a decision we make on our own. We need to ask ourselves why we are choosing to follow Jesus, if what we believe about Him is true, and if we are ready to live out what our faith means.

When someone becomes a Christian, they are baptized as a way of identifying with Jesus in His death and resurrection—they promise to follow Him no matter what, even if it means suffering or dying for their faith someday. But baptism is also a way of celebrating our new life in Christ. When we are submerged in water, it’s a way of saying that Jesus has washed away our past mistakes and sins—that when He died on the cross, His blood washes us clean!

Holy Spirit: Spirit of God

The Holy Spirit is a person—the third member of the Godhead. He is worshipped and glorified with the Father and Son, yet He is distinct from them. The Holy Spirit is also called the Holy Ghost, or simply “the Spirit.” He is all-knowing, everywhere present, and completely trustworthy.

When we accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord, God gives us a gift: the presence of His Holy Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit works inside us—He comforts us when we are sad, guides us when we are making decisions, encourages us to be patient and long-suffering, helps us fight temptation, speaks through us when we share God’s message with other people—and much more.

The Holy Spirit is also the One who reveals the truth to us about His Word. He brings glory to Jesus Christ, and He helps us understand what God wants from us.

Total Forgiveness

When we sin—that is, when we do things that are wrong in God’s eyes—we break fellowship with Him. But no matter how bad our sins may seem to us, the good news is that Jesus has already forgiven them all!
